This 2-hour, family-friendly experience offers you an opportunity to learn more in depth about the Queen Bee, including her lifecycle, mating rituals, and roles within the colony! In this hands on experience you will learn how to graft larva to rear your own Queen bees.
Whether you adore bees, are passionate about sustainability, or simply want an unforgettable Whistler experience, we have something for every level of beekeeper.
Facilitated by experienced and skilled beekeepers passionate about bees and sustainable practices, you will leave with a newfound interest and appreciation for these wonderful creatures.
Topics to be covered include:
- Understanding a frame; identifying eggs, larva, brood and more
- Grafting your own larva cells to rear new Queen bees
- How Queen bees are developed from larva, to egg layer
- Tour of Queen mating hives and viewing virgin queens
- Practice the skill of Queen spotting while handling a frame of bees
- Bee castes and facts (including the roles of queen, worker, and drone bees)
- The importance of honey bees for the environment and pollination
- Bee suits and safety protocols for interacting with bees
- What makes the various types of honey
- Tasting and comparing our locally produced fireweed honey and wildflower honey
- Jarring your own honey to take home
- Q&A, recap of key learnings, and take-home messages
Cost: Adults – $189 | Children under 12 – $139 (protective wear will be provided)
Recommended ages 8 and older.
At the end of the experience, each participant will get to keep a 100ml jar of honey, perfect to take on a flight home.
